HOLT'S QUANTUM® AI TUTOR SELECTED AS FINALIST FOR ASSOCIATION OF EDUCATIONAL PUBLISHERS DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

Austin, Texas - June 9, 2003 - Holt, Rinehart and Winston today announced that the Holt Online Learning-Quantum® Artificial Intelligence Tutors was selected as a finalist in the 2003 Distinguished Achievement Awards sponsored by the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP).

The AEP Distinguished Achievement Awards program recognizes diverse learning resources exhibiting superior content and educational value. Judging panels are drawn from a national pool of writing, publishing, and design experts in print and technology; education editors; educators; and curriculum experts. Of the hundreds of submitted entries, three or four products are selected as finalists in each category.

Holt Online Learning-Quantum® Artificial Intelligence Tutors are personal tutors that complement lessons from Holt Chemistry, Holt Science Spectrum Physical Science, and Holt Science and Technology Physical Science textbooks. Quantum Tutors® are an on-demand resource for students who need additional individualized help with science concepts being taught in class. The Tutors are easily accessible online and can be used in class, in the computer lab, or at home. The Quantum Tutors® allow students to practice at their own pace and on problems of their own choice, not just a limited database of pre-selected problems. Quantum Tutors® go beyond simply offering a correct answer; they help students understand why an answer is correct or incorrect. Students enter their work just as they would on paper, and the Quantum Tutors® interpret their work and coach them through the problem-solving process, similar to a human tutor.

"The AEP award is one of the most highly regarded in the educational publishing industry. The AEP process helps educators make informed purchasing decisions when selecting materials for their schools," said Pam Nelson, Holt senior vice president of marketing. "Tutorial programs are highly requested supplements by teachers. The Quantum Tutors® are a targeted solution that ensures mastery of core concepts while helping teachers with graduation requirements in science, standards-based instruction, and high stakes testing. The Quantum Tutors® are exceptional products both instructionally and pedagogically."

Holt World Languages DVD Tutor and Holt Interactive Spelling were also selected in the Instructional Materials - Curriculum Packages category and Children's Technology category, respectively.

The Holt DVD Tutors for Spanish and French provide individual tutoring that is completely integrated with the instructional sequence of the corresponding Holt World Language textbook. Holt Interactive Spelling is an innovative CD-ROM based computer program for grades six through 12 that helps students improve spelling and vocabulary skills by working independently or as part of a group. Along with the Quantum Tutors®, these recently recognized products are part of an extensive portfolio of core and supplementary resources published by Holt. Holt has over 130 years of educational publishing history and the expertise of educational leaders, researchers, and classroom teachers to keep Holt products in the forefront of educational resource development. In addition to print-based textbooks, technology products, and other supplementary resources, Holt publishes electronic textbooks in all five curriculum areas including science, mathematics, language arts, world languages, and social studies.
